9 Essential September Home Maintenance Tips to Prepare Your Home for Fall
September is here, and so is the perfect opportunity to give your home a little love before the chilly months roll in. This list makes it easy to stay on top of things, protect your space, and keep everything running smoothly as we transition into fall. Let’s break it down!
1. Wash and Lubricate Your Garage Door
After my garage door started sounding like a haunted house prop, I realized it just needed a little clean-up. Summer storms and windy days can leave your garage door in need of some serious TLC. Dirt builds up in the tracks, and before you know it, your door is making noises that no one should have to hear. Grab a microfibre cloth, give the tracks a good wipe, and then use a lithium spray (NOT WD40) to keep things moving smoothly.
Need help? Here’s a handy how-to video that explains it all. Because who doesn’t love a squeak-free garage door that won’t wake the neighbours?
2. Critter-Proof Your Home
Fall brings cooler temps—and the search for cozy spots for critters. We’ve learned the hard way that mice love a warm basement (or messy kitchen cupboard!), so now’s the time to block their access. Walk around your house, especially the basement and garage, and check for gaps or tiny holes. A foam sealant will work wonders.
3. Plant Your Spring Bulbs
It’s time to think ahead to spring blooms—because let’s face it, after winter, we’ll all need a little colour in our lives. September is perfect for planting tulips, daffodils, and other spring bulbs. Just make sure the soil has cooled down enough. Plant now, and when spring comes, your garden will be the envy of the block!
Example: My neighbour planted bulbs last fall, and by April her garden looked like something out of a magazine. I’ve already got my bulbs ready to go! As a novice gardener, I found this blog post extremely helpful!
4. Service Your Yard Equipment
Your lawnmower and garden tools worked hard this summer, so don’t just shove them into the garage for winter. Give them some care before you store them away—clean the blades, check the oil, and make sure everything’s in tip-top shape. Trust me, your future self will thank you when spring rolls around, and everything runs smoothly.
We skipped this step once and regretted it when our lawnmower wouldn’t start come spring. Now, we take an hour in September to clean and maintain everything. It’s worth it!
5. Clean Out Your Fridge
We’ve all got those mystery containers lurking at the back of the fridge—time to clean them out! Toss anything expired, give the shelves a good wipe down, and get things organized. Not only will it clear space, but it’ll also make you feel ready to tackle the new season.
After I cleaned out my fridge last fall, I had so much space for all my favourite autumn goodies; hello apple cider by the gallon! It felt amazing to start fresh!
6. Ditch Expired Meds and Vitamins
When was the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet? Expired meds and vitamins are just taking up space and can actually lose their effectiveness. Go through and properly dispose of anything that’s past its prime. Trust me, it’s one of those chores that feels way more satisfying than you expect.
I tackled this over the weekend and found vitamins that expired two years ago—whoops! Clearing out the cabinet felt like hitting the reset button on my health routine.
7. Create a Safety Plan for Natural Disasters
We don’t like to think about it, but natural disasters can happen anywhere. Whether it’s a hurricane, derecho (!), or other unexpected event, having a safety plan in place can bring peace of mind. Sit down with your family and talk about evacuation routes, emergency contacts, and what supplies you need in your kit.
We put together an emergency kit with water, batteries, and other essentials. Now we know we’re ready, just in case!
8. Swap Out Summer Gear for Fall Essentials
With summer winding down, it’s time to trade out your beach chairs and pool floats for cozy blankets and fall décor. Stash away those summer items and bring out your fall favourites—think warm-toned pillows, spice-scented candles, and harvest-inspired wreaths for the front door.
Last year, I went through all my throw blankets and made a nice basket display in the living room with my coziest ones. The transformation was simple but made our home feel so warm and inviting! I found this awesome blog post with lots of other great ideas, too!
9. Clean & Decorate Your Front Door for Fall
Speaking of your front door, it’s time to give it a good wipe down to get rid of summer dust. Then, go ahead and jazz it up with some fall décor—think pumpkins, wreaths, and maybe even a festive doormat. Nothing says “welcome” like a clean, cozy, fall-ready front entryway!
Now that I’ve painted my front door, I can’t wait to add some pumpkins and a fall wreath. It will instantly made my home feel ready for the season—and it’s a great way to greet guests.
