October Home Maintenance Checklist: Simple Safety Tips for Fall

October might be here, but let’s be honest—it doesn’t feel like fall in Ottawa just yet. The weather’s been unseasonably warm, so while we’re all still soaking up that bonus sunshine, it’s easy to forget the chillier days are just around the corner. But the seasons will change soon, and it’s the perfect time to get your home prepped and your safety measures in check.

And speaking of safety, a quick reminder: One of our team members had a minor house fire last week! Thankfully, she had an up-to-date fire extinguisher, which kept it from becoming a real tragedy. Moments like these are why this October checklist is about more than just maintenance—it’s about protecting the people and things you love most.

Easy October Home Maintenance and Safety Checklist

We get it. Life’s busy. That’s why we’ve kept this checklist simple, so you can breeze through it and enjoy the rest of this warm weather. Take care of these things now, and you’ll be ready for whatever the season brings.

1. Change Your Air Filters

This is one of those tasks that seems small, but trust us, it makes a big difference. Fresh filters keep your air clean and your heating system running efficiently. You can even order them online right now and have them waiting on your doorstep! It’s so easy, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.

If it’s been ages since your furnace was checked, now’s the time to book a service. The pros will clean your air ducts and make sure everything’s ready before the cold creeps in.

2. Clear Out Rain Gutters and Downspouts

Here’s one that’s easy to put off—but don’t. Blocked gutters can lead to water damage, which is a real pain (and expense) to deal with. Take some time to clear them out, or if you’re not up for balancing on a ladder, call in a pro.

Gutter cleaning services usually run between $119-$227. That’s much cheaper than repairing water damage!

3. Check Fire Extinguishers and Review Your Safety Plan

October is Fire Safety Month, and it’s the perfect time to make sure your fire extinguishers are ready to go. As we saw firsthand last week, having one within reach can make all the difference. If you don’t have a fire extinguisher—or can’t remember when you last checked it—now’s the time.

If you’ve never used one before, take a few minutes to watch a quick tutorial online or see if your local fire department offers hands-on training.

Also, consider adding a fire safety kit with a ladder to your home. You’ll never regret being extra prepared.

4. Clean Out Dryer Lint

Here’s a small but critical task—clean your dryer lint trap after every load. This one simple habit could prevent a potential house fire. You might be surprised to learn that dryer fires are more common than you’d think, causing around 2,900 fires every year. Don’t let a laundry day mishap be one of them.

5. Clean Your Fireplace

Before you light that first cozy fire of the season, make sure your fireplace is clean and free of debris. If you’ve got a chimney, check it for bird nests or any other blockages (you’d be amazed at what can end up there). Not feeling confident about doing it yourself? Hire a chimney sweep to ensure everything’s in tip-top shape.

6. Stow the Hose and Winterize Your Sprinkler System

We know it still feels like summer out there, but don’t let the warm weather fool you. Winter is coming. Stash your garden hose in the garage and winterize your irrigation system before freezing temps hit, and you’re left with busted pipes.

7. Seal Your Outdoor Surfaces

Cracks and gaps in your home’s exterior might seem minor, but they can quickly lead to water damage or drafts that drive up your heating bill. A little sealing now can save you a lot of hassle later.

8. Clean and Protect Outdoor Furniture

Even though we’re still enjoying the nice weather (I’m writing this from my patio!), but it’s a good idea to start thinking about packing up your outdoor furniture. Give it a good clean, and either store it or cover it to protect it from the elements. This way, when spring rolls around, your outdoor space will be ready to enjoy.

9. Aerate and Fertilize Your Lawn

We know lawn care doesn’t exactly scream “fun,” but trust us—your future self will thank you. Aerating and fertilizing your lawn in the fall sets you up for a lush, green yard come spring.

And there you have it! A quick and easy checklist to keep your home in great shape. Whether you tackle these tasks all in one go or spread them out over the month, your home will be ready for whatever weather comes next.
